Groundwater remediation klokhuisplien haarlem

Complete transfer of liability for groundwater contamination

Enhanced biodegradation and chemical reduction

Project description

Following site redevelopment of the former Joh. Enschedé site in downtown Haarlem, a previously unknown source zone was found on public land. Groundwater Technology stood out as the preferred Best Value Procurement Contractor for the City of Haarlem and has completely taken over all responsibility for source zone and plume remediation.

Situation and approach

Prior to redevelopment of the Joh. Enschedé site in the historic town centre of Haarlem, comprehensive remediation was implemented. During monitoring however, the groundwater contamination was found to expand, rather than the expected shrinking/ Assessment showed presence of a previously unknown deep source zone under an area with many historic 17th & 18th century residences and buildings.

Groundwater Technology activities

We completely took over all responsibility for remediation of the source zone and plume management. This included managing relations with residents as well as all permitting. We integrated all disciplines into a single comprehensive plan, comprised of technical design, remediation plan and environmental management plan.

We installed over 550 direct injections of amendments designed to enhance anaerobic biodegradation and chemical reduction in the subsoil. The project is currently in the monitoring phase.
